International #KissAGingerDay

Good news for those sporting fiery red hair – today (Sunday, 12th January) is Kiss A Ginger Day!  It’s even trending on Twitter, so it must be true.

Approximately 1 to 2 percent of the human population has red hair and from my (albeit fairly brief!) research, the majority of them seem to be actors!

A single gene is usually responsible for natural red hair; a mutation in MC1R, which codes for the melanocortin-1 receptor.  More helpfully referred to as “the ginger gene”, it is responsible for all redhead traits, including varying shades of ginger hair, pale skin and freckles everywhere!

So, on this auspicious day, who should we be offering to kiss?  Google’s answer is basically actors.  Here are just a few of your options:

  • Almost all of the Harry Potter cast
  • Julianne Moore
  • Damian Lewis
  • Emma Stone
  • Eddie Redmayne
  • Jessica Chastain
  • Isla Fisher
  • Amy Adams
  • Nicole Kidman
  • Benedict Cumberbatch (apparently he has dark ginger hair?)

Of course, if actors aren’t your thing, you might consider two lovely Brits; Ed Sheehan or Prince Harry?

Is there anyone I’ve missed?
