What is Kindle Unlimited?

Kindle Unlimited (also referred to as KU) is Amazon’s book subscription service, which gives the reader unlimited access to a subset of books sold on Amazon. Not all books sold by Amazon are available on KU. It is down to the author of each individual book to decide whether to opt into the program, or not. The cost of KU subscription is paid monthly by the reader and varies by country. On Amazon.com, it is currently around $10 per month (£8 on Amazon.co.uk).

What do authors get from Kindle Unlimited?

Authors of books which are available via KU get paid on a page per read basis. The value of each page read is tiny (approx $0.004 per page) and fluctuates (typically on a downwards trajectory!!) on a monthly basis. Obviously, the income if only one page is read, is ridiculously small. What authors are banking on is bulk page reads taking place. For example, on average each of my books are usually around 350 pages in length (by KU calculations). This equates to almost $1.5 US dollars (approx £1), if a reader completes the book. For an author, income obviously only becomes significant if you can start to ramp this up across multiple readers.

So, can I try Kindle Unlimited for free?
