Gaining a Refund from “Accidental” Amazon Kindle Book Purchases

This morning, I had notification that a second book of mine this month has been refunded due to an Accidental Kindle Book Purchase. According to their policies, you may request a refund for an ebook which you have purchased in error, if Amazon receive your request within seven days of the date of purchase.

I am, of course, fully signed up to consumer rights when used correctly; I often rely on them myself, after all. However, in this instance, the person in question possibly needs to exercise a little more imagination. It is extremely rare for any of my books to be refunded, so when it happens, it does catch my attention. In this case, the two purchases they made (on two separate dates this month) were:

  • The Daniel Lawson Series: Books 1-4
  • Easy Come, Easy Go (Book 5 in the Daniel Lawson Series)

Yeah, it’s not very subtle, is it? And certainly not a coincidence. Especially when coupled with the knowledge that it took them a good proportion of their allotted 7-day limit time to return the four book series, which is no small read!

What is the betting that when the 6th book in the Daniel Lawson series is published in November, I mysteriously receive confirmation that another Accidental Kindle Book Purchase has been refunded? Fortunately, readers who abuse the system and constantly read and then return books for a refund, do eventually get noticed and have their account suspended by Amazon.

Despite the fact I am losing income when this happens, I can’t help but smile because they remind me of the book equivalent of people who go into grocery stores and eat stuff they don’t intend to pay for on their way round! Why is my mind generating an image of the Slimer in Ghostbusters, lobbing plates of food into his mouth…?

Who is Daniel Lawson?

Released on 20th November 2020
